Installing Replacement Windows - One Step At A Time

Installing replacement windows is a great way to save energy and increase a home's value. Here's how replacement windows are installed, step-by-step:

Step One: Measure Twice!

When installing replacement windows, the most important step is getting the measurements correct. While some newer homes will have standard-sized windows, making the process even simpler, older homes typically have a variety of odd window sizes. Another consideration when measuring is to be sure to get the dimensions of the wall opening - these are the numbers that you'll need to know when ordering replacement windows.

Step Two: Remove Old Window.

Taking out the existing window can be a really simple process or quite a big ordeal, again depending on the age of the house and the construction methods used. Interior trim is easy to remove - just be sure to use the necessary caution so it can be reinstalled later. Windows from recent times are usually able to be easily removed by taking off the trim on the exterior and then pulling the nails used to attach the window. Older windows which were not installed in this fashion will take more handiwork to cleanly uninstall.

Step Three: Prepare The Window Opening.

Now that the removal of old windows is completed, it's time to actually begin installing replacement windows - well, almost time anyway. First, it's a good idea to make sure the window opening is clear. Measuring once more at this stage will never hurt either, in case any adjustments must be made before placing the new window. If any weather seals or caulking is required with the new window system, this is the appropriate time to compete these steps before proceeding with installing replacement windows.

Step Four: Mount And Secure The Replacement Window.

All the prep work is now complete, and it's now time to place the replacement window unit in the wall opening. Having a partner always helps during his step. Simply place the window unit in the opening and use shims and a level to begin to make it level and plumb. Once you're there, begin nailing the window in place from a top corner. As you continue the nailing process, working your way to the other side of the window, keep checking and adjusting the shims for levelness as needed.

Step Five: Measure Again.

The final step to installing replacement windows is checking for squareness before completing the nailing and securing process. Once the first couple of nails have been placed, be sure to measure diagonally from corner to corner of the window. The measurement must be exactly the same both ways to guarantee it is square and will operate correctly. Once the window is ensured to be square, it's just a matter of finishing off the fastening and reinstalling the trim.

While these steps are not really intended to be precise instructions for installing replacement windows, hopefully they'll give you a better understanding of how the process is completed.
